Summary:
The Veterinary Assistant is responsible for all aspects of patient care, from evaluation at check in, preparing anesthetic drugs, surgery preparation, monitoring anesthesia and recovery, and communicating post-operative care to clients at check out. Our veterinary team follows the standards and protocols as set forth by the ASPCA Humane Alliance.
Responsibilities will include but not limited to:
Nursing care 40%
Possess in depth knowledge and understanding of veterinary medical concepts
Provide compassionate and quality patient care at all times utilizing Fear Free/Low Stress handling for an average of 40 patients per day
Proficiency in various technical nursing skills, including, but not limited to, venipuncture, catheter placement, anesthesia monitoring, emergency care, and pharmacology
Prepare anesthetic drugs, recording and maintaining drug logs as required by the DEA
Evaluate, premedicate, prep animals for surgery.
Monitor anesthesia pre, post and during surgery
Possess critical thinking and multi-tasking skills and have the ability to prioritize and re-prioritize based on schedule and patient care. Remain alert and aware of animal behavior and physical condition at all times, taking action when abnormalities are seen
Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission
Administer injections, animal vaccinations, medications, treatments, and supportive care measures as directed by lead veterinarian
Perform other duties as assigned
Professionalism, Communication, and Administrative (40%)
Enter required information into ClinicHQ software timely and accurately, prepare medications, e-collars and paperwork for each client
Provide excellent customer service and accurately communicate intake and discharge information to each client
Ensure that medical supplies are stocked, in-date, and stored appropriately
Ensure that all structures and equipment are functional. When equipment is not working properly, report to the appropriate team or department for timely repair.
Work well with the team to answer phones, emails/texts, and walk-ins.
Communicate medical patient information to lead veterinarian; communicate thorough and detailed information to the on-coming team
Perform other duties as assigned
Housekeeping and Kennels (20%)
Clean and disinfect kennels, transport carriers, equipment, and facilities using appropriate cleaning products/techniques.
Observe kennels, crates and common areas throughout the day to ensure they are kept clean and presentable to the public at all times
Participate in the cleaning, disinfecting, stocking supplies and laundry daily
Maintain safe and sanitary conditions to include the sterilization of surgical instruments, safe handling of cleaning supplies, chemicals and equipment in compliance with safety and MSDS rules
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Minimum 1-year experience as a veterinary assistant or kennel tech with competence in veterinary skills such as obtaining vitals, phlebotomy, vaccine administration, nail trims, medical restraint, and CPR
Must be a compassionate caregiver for the animals and have patience and understanding when working with the public
Must provide excellent customer service in person, on the phone and via text/email. Clear communication, written and verbal, with the ability to problem solve under pressure
Ability to multitask, have keen attention to detail, and excellent organizational skills
Computer literate in a Windows environment, and the ability to become proficient using clinic software
Ability to effectively problem solve and make decisions independently surrounding the safety and care of animals
Ability to walk, bend, stand and reach constantly during a minimum 8-hour day. Able to safely walk and handle dogs over 100lbs. Ability to lift 50lbs.
Must be a team player, have willingness to adjust schedule if operations require, and thrive in a fast-paced environment
Compensation:
Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, and experience. The average number of hours per day is between 8-12.
